Numeracy

At Ferny Creek Primary School, we believe every child is a capable mathematician. Our approach to teaching Mathematics is all about supporting each learner at their point of need, helping them grow in confidence and capability as they explore the world of numbers, patterns, and problem-solving.

We want every child to:

  • Develop practical numeracy skills they can use in everyday life, both now and in the future.
  • Feel confident and capable when working with numbers, patterns, shapes, data, and more.
  • Use maths to think critically and solve real problems, at school, at home, and in the world around them.
  • Communicate their thinking clearly, using maths to explain, explore, and make decisions.
  • Build deep understanding of key concepts in number, algebra, measurement, space, statistics, and probability—learning how to apply these ideas across different subjects and situations.
  • See the connections between maths and other areas of learning, including technology, science, and the arts.
  • Feel positive about maths, recognising that it’s a subject for everyone—not just those who find it easy straight away.
  • Appreciate the beauty and creativity of mathematics, understanding that it’s more than just numbers—it's about patterns, puzzles, ideas, and the way the world works.

Personalised Learning in Maths

Every child learns in their own way and at their own pace. That’s why we:

  • Use a variety of teaching strategies to meet learners where they’re at
  • Group students flexibly, so they get the right level of challenge and support
  • Encourage a growth mindset, helping students understand that mistakes are part of learning
  • Celebrate effort, curiosity, and persistence as much as correct answers

Through our whole-child approach, we aim to make mathematics meaningful, enjoyable, and empowering—for every learner.
