Veggie Patch

At Ferny Creek primary School, our Veggie Patch Program is a vibrant, hands-on learning experience that connects students with the natural world while building important life skills. Set in our beautiful outdoor learning spaces, the program fosters lifelong habits of care, curiosity, and environmental responsibility.

Students are involved in every step of the gardening process — from planting seeds, nurturing young plants, and understanding seasonal cycles, through to harvesting fresh produce. They learn practical gardening skills while exploring the science of plant life cycles, weather, soil, and ecosystems.

Our garden-to-plate approach brings learning full circle. Students have the opportunity to cook with the produce they’ve grown, enjoying the flavours of their hard work and gaining a greater understanding of nutrition, food preparation, and where food comes from.

The program also supports social and emotional learning, as students develop patience, responsibility, teamwork, and pride in caring for something over time.

We’re excited to be growing this program even further with the development of a brand-new outdoor classroom and sensory garden. This dedicated space will offer students a calming, nature-based environment for learning, exploring, and reflecting. With fragrant plants, interactive textures, and thoughtful design, our sensory garden will support wellbeing while offering new opportunities for multi-sensory, inclusive outdoor education.
